Summer 2018 | 21 support from the community to provide the matching funds and local boots on the ground to make the project happen while VAST is focused on section 1C. Perhaps it will also provide a model for other communities to extend the trail. Towns Helping With Maintenance The support we already get from LVRT towns would be hard to overstate. One of the biggest things is that town highway departments have added the trail to their mowing schedules. This helps transform the trail from the rustic path it would be on its own to the more park-like setting visitors enjoy. It will also reduce the long-term cost of maintaining the ditches along the trail. Just to name a few recent and upcoming additions: the Cambridge Rail Trail Committee made arrangements with a landowner near the Cambridge Junction trailhead to provide overflow parking in a field (across the covered bridge). Hyde Park is working on a project to cap contaminated soils at their trailhead, add picnic tables and a kiosk, and improve the parking. Danville is in the initial stages of a grant to improve connections between the village and the trail. These just add to the list of things towns have already done to improve access to the trail.
