Many of you are out on the VAST trail network getting trail and bridge work done. Thank you for that! This past June, the VAST board of directors, alternate directors and county trail coordinators got together for an intensive two-day meeting about VAST and how we sustain our trail network to continue to be the best snowmobile destination in the Northeast. The goal is to have as much money as we can to support your efforts and sustain top-notch trails for our membership. That means cleaning up some gaps, making sure we have a proper groomer fleet with machines covering around the same amount of trail distance, making sure our maps are all based on GIS data and to pay for those actual miles to the clubs, etc. On the other hand, we also now will be promoting Vermont more as a family destination. I spend every weekend riding in the winter and going to club events, and I also travel to other states to do this from time to time. By far, Vermont has more families out riding with kids. Why do they do it here? Because we have great trails, great signage, great maps, great clubs and almost all trails have locations where you can eat, gas up or lodge. Our new Snow Traveler’s Guide Of SNOW TRAVELERS (produced each fall) will highlight the family friendliness. These guides, as they always are, will be brought to the six regional snowmobile tradeshows we go to (Mass., N.H., Maine, Pa., N.Y.) and also be put in Vermont welcome centers. They are free, so if you want some to showcase at local shops, or club events, please just ask us to send you some. Fond regards, “The Playground”in Island Pond
